Monologists

A monologist is a performer who tells stories or recites poetry, often in a one-person show. Monologists may be solo actors, or they may be part of a larger cast. They are often associated with the spoken word movement, and may use techniques such as storytelling, slam poetry, or oratory.

The history of monologists stretches back to ancient Greece, when actors would recite poetry and stories as part of a larger dramatic production. In the 18th century, monologists such as Robert Burns and Samuel Taylor Coleridge began to perform solo shows, often in pubs and other small venues. In the 20th century, monologists such as Spalding Gray, Ruth Draper, and Lily Tomlin became popular for their one-person shows.

Today, monologists continue to be popular performers. Some of the most well-known monologists include Brian d’Arcy James, Mike Daisey, Sarah Jones, and Anna Deavere Smith. Monologists often use their shows to explore personal stories or issues that are important to them. They may also use their shows to comment on social or political issues.

Many monologists are also associated with the spoken word movement. This movement emphasizes the use of spoken language over written language. Monologists often use spoken word techniques such as storytelling, slam poetry, or oratory to communicate their ideas.

Spoken word poetry is a form of poetry that is often used by monologists. Slam poetry is a type of spoken word poetry that is performed in front of an audience. It is often competitive, and poets are often judged on the quality of their performance as well as the quality of their poetry. Oratory is the art of public speaking, and monologists often use oratory to communicate their ideas to an audience.

Many monologists are also associated with the theater. They often use theatrical techniques to communicate their ideas to an audience. This may include things such as costumes, set design, and lighting. Some monologists are also involved in the creation of new works of theater.
